The three dimensional images seen on the likes of 3D TVs use the, stereoscopic display, multi-view display and what some call 2D plus-depth. It is a technology that has finally come of age with the production of the later HDTV models on the market of today. The introduction of the 3D TVs that hit the markets a few years back was what only appeared to be a modern fad. Many though that it would soon pass by way of the dodo bird and that would be the end of it.

Much to the surprise of many the 3D TV technology has progressed in a useful new way of viewing TV and movie entertainment that is no longer just a passing fad. Sure there will always be people who do not care for it because they do not care for change. But we also have the other group of huge fans that can’t live without their 3D TVs.

What’s the 3D TVs Story?

Going as far back as the late 1890’s a patent was filed by the late British film pioneer William Friese-Green for the 3D process for movies. It was believed that you could view two images stereoscopically and the brain would combine the images and result would be a 3D depth perception.

The popularity of TV got its big start in the early 50s. Very early on 3D movies began making their appearance on the scene. Bwana Devil a 3D movie produced by United Artists all over America in 1952. In 1953 House of Wax came out with stereophonic sound. Dial M for Murder produced by Alfred Hitchcock was made in 3D but released in 2D so it could be shown by more theaters on its release. 3D got somewhat an earlier start in the Soviet Union coming out with Robinzon Kruzo in 1946 as its first 3D movie.

Hitachi introduced 3D projection that requires no glasses or filters. Somewhat complicated system uses 24 projectors, translucent half mirrors and lenses. The system superimposes 3D images at a 60 degree viewing angle horizontally and 30 degrees viewing vertically. The goal of the industry is 3D without glasses so other major companies like Sony are also trying to make a reliable system that does not need glasses.

The most popular method use for 3D video is Stereoscopy. It makes use of two side by side mounted cameras with a separation the same as the pupils of a viewer. Stereo pairs are captured and projected back in a two view setup.

The multi view capture of a 3D scene uses many cameras for multiple independent video streams. With different types of camera setup multi view displays can also be rerouted for more image processing.

In the multi view or stereo capture of images there is a process to extract the 2D including depth for each view. This creates a device independent representation of the original 3D image. The major advantage is that the 2D including depth processing can be reused for the recreation of 3D scenes from a single view. Giving legacy film the 3D look is not yet a perfect science.

What We Have Today in 3D Ready TV Sets

Today we have a somewhat modern 3D ready TV sets that can operate in the traditional 2D mode and with the aid of several of the display technologies can operate in 3D. You will find this type of 3D ready TV sets support HDMI 1.4 and have refresh rates of 120 Hz or better. You will also find some come with glasses and others require you to buy them separately.

3D Standardization

As with all new entertainment industry products a common compatible standard is the goal for home electronics in the area of 3D. To meet this requirement faster frame rate in high definition was needed to avoid judder. Still other unresolved standards exist with the glasses used. 3D Passive or 3D active technologies and the recording formats of Blu-ray are still not quite standard.
