Plasma, LCD, projector, CRT? The choice of display technologies can be overwhelming for the un- or under-informed. Which TV should you next choose?

CHOOSING LCD

Slim and desirable, LCD screens are the new belles of the TV Ball. But they're not as perfect as you think...
Liquid Crystal Displays have been around for over 20 years, but have only recently become a reality in the TV market.

The reason for this is that their fundamental operation relies on crystals moving in a viscous liquid and, like wading in treacle, it's a very slow process. Early generation LCD panels simply could not switch pixels on and off fast enough to cope with a moving video image, and consequently remained in clock displays and PC monitors that were predominantly used for near-static images.

Thankfully, as the technology has developed, the pixel-switching time has dropped dramatically and, in the very best models, causes very little motion blur on moving images. This has opened the floodgates for LCD TVs right up to over 50 inches. However, unlike plasmas, price is no indication of quality.

Hot or Not?

LCD contrast ratio is generally poorer than any other TV technology as the backlight can leak through the "switched off" pixels. A potent backlight can lift the brightness figures, but colour is dependent on single block filtering, so the total range of colours and the colour saturation are also mediocre. The deep liquid crystal substrate means the picture integrity fades away as you move off axis, although the latest models claim a viewing angle up to 170 degrees. That said, manufacturer's specification sheets can read like Tolkien-scale fiction at times, so getting a demonstration of an LCD TV before you buy is essential.

So why is LCD currently the must-have technology? Not only are LCD TVs a super slim flat panel, they are much lighter in weight than plasma models, as the LCD itself is made from plastic rather than glass. Screen resolutions are HD-friendly on larger screen models and each pixel has a much better defined edge definition than the glowing phosphor dots of plasma or CRT - creating a very sharp image. LCD TVs do not suffer screen burn-in from constantly displaying static images, are silent in operation and, from an energy-saving perspective, use little electricity.

But the biggest key to LCD TV's rise has been falling prices. Each panel is cut out of a single large sheet of fully engineered LCD and each new manufacturing generation creates larger initial sheets. This reduces cost per unit and hence the street price.

LCD TV costs will continue to fall, the picture quality will continue to rise and, as features like digital tuners, memory card readers and wireless connectivity become mainstream, LCD TVs will dominate the 32 inch flat panel market.

As long as you make sure you are buying an HD-ready model and try before you buy, you can't go wrong.

Obviously you've upgraded to a true HD TV and the difference in picture quality is breath taking. The real problem is now in the quality of your DVD playback. It has somehow become less crisp than it used to be. Part of this is perception and part of it has to do with your player. Looking at an HD DVD might save you a little money and enhance your movie watching experience.

The advantages of an HD DVD player really boil down to two basic topics: convenience and quality. If you are looking for a solution that will make your DVDs play as nice as the HD channels you are receiving, forget it, you will never see that kind of quality out of a true DVD with anything that is out on the market now. However, HD DVD players offer something blu-ray does not: interchangeability.

There is no such thing as "true" HD picture with a standard DVD, though in most cases your old DVDs do play fine. This has more to do with the limits placed on the DVDs themselves; they just cannot compete for clarity and audio accuracy that true HD DVDs and Blu-ray discs can provide. So if you are thinking you'll get a better picture out of an HD DVD player using your old DVDs, the difference will be nominal.

HD DVD players use a blue laser. What this does for you as a consumer is shorten the load time and allow for a more compressed disc. That is to say a standard sized DVD will hold more digital content. That's how HD DVD is able to deliver a crisper picture in high def and its older cousins are not.

Another advantage for HD DVD players is simply that having one player that can play two formats saves you space. Otherwise you'd be losing space under your TV to yet another player. And no one wants to see that.

Another space saver comes from the fact that HD DVDs come in the same packaging as normal DVDs. This makes your movie shelf look more uniform and prevents you from having to store movies on different shelves. For those with OCD this helps some.

The players are readily available and relatively inexpensive compared to Blu-ray, so price is another factor. If given the option a lot of consumers would go for the cheaper solution to a problem and HD players for DVD are a viable one.

The real plus to it all is that you don't have to start over on your collection and you can keep one basic unit beneath your TV instead of two, three of four different boxes. For we older people who remember the Betamax/VHS wars if the early 80s there is the added comfort of knowing we don't have to completely switch formats again or hope we guessed which was going to become the standard.

Technical evolution is really fast today. Everything is being shifted to digital formats. At one time, to record our extremely special moments, we only had still film cameras at our disposal. The next great invention is magnetic tapes for video recorders. Cameras then slowly implemented digital technology, resulting in less size for the camera while still getting good images. And now that those high definition TV's are so normal, high def camcorders are now needed to capture your moments in vivid clearness.

High definition digital camcorders work just like standard definition cameras, but they have much more feature. They have better resolution ; customarily not lower that 1080i quality. They also incorporate better zooming lenses, since the cameras can record more pixels than standard definition. Some better camcorder models can even rival the best digital still cameras now available.

When looking around for high def video recorders, try to discover if it has features that are right for you. The things that you need to keep an eye out for are the optical lens, the imager, and the recorder. These things can practically do or die your deal on your video cam. If one of these parts skimps on features, then it'll affect the general quality of your videos.

The optical lens is the very first thing that your images pass thru. It controls the aperture and the zooming of the video. The lens then projects the image captured into the imager. The imager is a photosensitive device that converts the light from your scenes into electrical signals. The signals are then passed on to the recorder, which processes the first signals for writing into media. The video captured may not contain all of the detail of your scene, so it is important to find HD cameras that have the best parts that your money can afford.

There are a few brand names that offer a range of sizes and accessories. Canon has a lot of top quality camcorders that range in price from couple hundred to a pair thousand depending on what you need. The Flip video craze has taken a large amount of anti mpeg recorder people and turned them around. Its small compact size and simplicity is excellent for those moments you are never typically prepared for. Now you may be with a flip.

Flip digital camcorders offer a great answer to your video needs and they're not too pricey like other better quality video recorders. They're tiny and forceful and their digital storage is either sixty minute or 120 minute. High quality hi-def video recorders are something everyone needs so go out and find your newest piece of electronics today.

Beginning with Luxembourg in 2006, followed then by ten other European countries, the advent of government mandated digital tv began. The United States decision to transition came soon after. The U. S. Required all television stations to move from analog to digital transmission effective June, 2006. 2011 will mark Asia's entry into the digital tv era with Japan coming on board.

The U. S. Congress' decision to mandate the switchover from analog to all-digital television was based primarily on two factors. First, the government's desire to free up precious broadcast bandwidth for those organizations concerned with public safety such as police and fire departments, and second, to provide viewers a better picture and sound experience. One other consequence of freed-up bandwidth is that some of it can be auctioned off by the government to companies which provide advanced wireless services.

To facilitate the conversion process the government addressed the need of those people who did not own a digital-ready television. It offered to those owners a coupon, worth up to forty dollars, which could be traded in for a digital converter box. Congress also stipulated that non-digital televisions could not be imported, nor could they be manufactured in the U. S. Retailers still selling analog television stock were required to prominently display at the point of sale a statement informing the customer that a converter box would be required for those sets.

The biggest difference in quality between an image generated by an analog tv signal and one generated by a digital tv signal centers around resolution. The level of detail and clarity of the picture the viewer sees is based on the number of pixels, arranged in a grid pattern, on the screen. Simply, the more pixels, or discrete points on the screen, the better the resolution will be. An analog generated grid usually tops out at 500 x 400 pixels. A digital image can create an image up to nearly ten times the number off pixels.

Multicasting is another advantage of digital television transmission. In an analog environment only one channel can be allocated to a chunk of bandwidth, whereas in a digital environment that same chunk can be divided into multiple channels. This provides television stations the opportunity to provide more programming to its viewers.

Interactive programming is another advantage of digital television. People subscribing to cable or satellite services will discover enhanced functionality. Example include movies-on-demand, text-messaging via the television's remote to live television shows, and VCR-type choices such as pause, slow motion and fast forward.

Today, consumers have four options when considering televisions. Analog TV's can still be used but require a converter box. A digital-ready set comes with its own converter but will usually lack in picture resolution. An HD-ready set may or may not include a converter which will generally offer good resolution. The most expensive option is the HDTV which will include a digital tuner and will have high resolution. Selecting which type of TV to go with is a matter of budget or other preferences.

With digital television viewers can realize new highs in picture quality and enhanced functionality. The developments of today represent only the beginning. As manufacturers seek out new technologies and competitive edges, the consumer can reasonably expect an even more compelling viewing experience.

There are many televisions on the market today, with several different types of displays. However, the two types of television most often discussed are the LCD (or Liquid Crystal Display) television and the Plasma TV. Each of these two types has its own unique advantages and drawbacks.

If you are looking at an LCD TV you might want to know a little bit more about it. It basically creates an image on the screen using individual lights. They last a long time for the most part (15 years or so) and are usually lighter than a lot of the other TV's. The downside of it when it is compared to the plasma TV is that it is not as good with contrast and black levels, although it is great with brightness. In order for an LCD TV to create black, it has to block out the light.

One of the problems also with the LCD TV is that the images that are moving fast can sometimes come up and be portrayed as choppy and maybe even pixelated. The newer LCD's have been fixed and the problem has been addressed so that the picture becomes smoother and the refresher rates are lower which helps. So if you are getting a newer one you should not have this problem.

The other choice you have between the two is the plasma TV. This is known for its great contrast and brightness and the blacks are amazing. They only come in sixes 37 inches and up but it doesn't mean that they are a lot pricier, they just seem to be a great price especially compared to the other TV's in the same size ranges as that one. There is one pretty big drawback though to the plasma TV and it is one of the reasons that sometimes it isn't used as a computer screen.

The downside to the plasma TV is that if an image is still on the screen for a period of time then it can get stuck on there and become ghost like. So the picture or ghost image can be stuck on the screen for a long time and get burned in there. However, the plasma TV has a longer life than the LCD TV does by about 5 years which makes it really good for its money.

If you know where to go it is easy to find cheap cables on the internet. Go to www.uglycable.com.au to get everything taken care of for your new house entertainment system.

Home theaters are all the rage these days and large displays and surround sound can revolutionize your viewing experience. What is more, it is even possible to turn your living room into the next best thing to a movie theater.

While large LCD TVs offer a great viewing experience, nothing can match a real projector to bring movies and TV to life. Projectors, also called multimedia projectors or home theater projectors, have been around for decades. However, it is only in the last few years that projectors have become affordable for the average consumer.

In addition, video projectors have become lighter and smaller, and picture quality and brightness has improved significantly. Quality projectors are available for well below the one thousand dollar mark, but you can pay thousands of dollars for more expensive models.

Buying a projector can be big investment so you need to know exactly what you want. There are 2 major varieties of projectors - Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) and Digital Light Processing (DLP).

Liquid Crystal Display projectors - Liquid Crystal Display projectors are the older of the 2 technologies, but they remain popular and are inexpensive. They have good brightness and color, and are a popular choice for presentations.

DLP projectors - Digital Light Processing (DLP) projectors have become more popular with domestic users because they are more suited for movies and TV. They are often smaller and lightweight, though they also cost more.

When shopping around for a video projector it is wise to have a firm grasp of the jargon and have a fair idea of what features you require.

Resolution - The chief reason for owning a video projector is so you can have a large, cinema-like display in your home. But bear in mind that big displays require high resolutions. The smallest resolution you should consider is 1280x720. If you need a genuine high-definition projector, 1920x1080 is what you need, but they are pricier.

Brightness - This is arguably the most essential feature on any projector. That said, it is also important to find a projector that is not too bright. A lot depends on the brightness of your room.

Contrast - Any home video projector needs to provide good contrast for cinematic quality. Also, a decent high-contrast gray screen will help.

Versatility - Your projector should be capable of connecting to a wide range of media, including TV receivers, DVD/BluRay players and computers so you can watch the shows you want, when you want.

If you are not a person who is not technology smart then you are probably wondering what HDMI cables are. I am not technology smart at all and this is why I looked up about these new devices that seem to be becoming more popular every day. Let me first tell you that HDMI stands for high definition multimedia interface, WOW what a mouth full!

The HDMI stands for (high definition multimedia interface). Yes, that is a mouth full! This cable will make your sound and pictures appear very clear when compared to the normal view that you have. These cables are the newest thing in technology and they have just came out in two thousand and three.

I always wondered how this was so different from all the other cables that I had on my television. I know I could tell you in the terms that most people would not understand, or I could tell you the way that I understand, which is in laymen terms. I did not know what this cable was until I read up on the internet about it and decided to hook mine up.

Most televisions, DVD players and also cable and satellite boxes will carry a HDMI hook up so that you can plug in the cable and hook it up to something else. Most devices you buy now come with at least three hook ups for an HDMI cable.

This cable is good because it makes your sound quality and picture a lot clearer and not only that but it also will help to prevent all the clutter that you have from other cables that are hanging around. An HDMI will replace more than just one cable and then it wont look like you have a big cluster of cables and wires coming out of the back of your entertainment system.

If you are looking to buy an HDMI cable, you should check online at different sites. Sometimes you can find them cheap and sometimes you just have to pay full price for them. You can find used one that may run as cheap as fifteen or ten dollars but most of the new ones which are at least five feet long will cost you thirty dollars. I have even seen some that cost one hundred and thirty.

There are many devices that will support a HDMI cable. Most of your newer televisions and DVD players will work perfectly well with this cable without anything more than plugging it in. There are even cable and satellite dishes that support the HDMI feature so that you can watch a clearer picture on cable or satellite and not just a video.

If you have a television that you can hook up to your DVD player and they both have an HDMI cable input, then you should give it a try. I am not someone who conforms with anything and I can say that I was happy that I conformed with this because it made this so much better and the price was steep but it was so worth it. IF your looking to go with an HDMI then you can find them online or at some local department stores.

You will find your hdmi cables in one place with no searching needed, today! The hdmi cable you need is affordable and easy to get now!

In order to make your projector lamp reach the maximum length in life span there are few tips that you should know as a user.

In order to correctly manipulate the projector lamp you need a piece of textile cloth or a pair of textile gloves. The lamp must never be touched with the fingers so it is always wise to manipulate the lamps components using a pair of textile gloves. The prints that remain on the glass of the lamp can cause the rising of the temperature in those areas and on the long term can significantly reduce the duration of the lamps functioning.

Another preventive measure is clearing the projectors filters. The dirty filters are blocking the air flow and cause the overheating of the lamp reducing the functioning period. In case of a replacement using the warranty certificate, the producer will test the lamp to see if the damage has occurred due to the overheating from filter clogging. If the test proves that that was the case the warranty is annulled. That is why it is very important to let the airflow around the projector as free as possible.

If you wish to introduce a new bulb in the existing lighting module of the lamp, make sure that the terminals are very tightly closed because the ceramic block can crack and that may cause ruptures that are reducing considerably the electronic isolation of the lamp.

On the other hand if the terminals are loose the risk of an electric arc to be produced is very high and this will cause the malfunction of the lamps source of power or even of the lamp itself.

Always use the remote control when stopping the projector. If you unplug the device without stopping it first the projector will invariably enter the cooling mode when the image is stopped and the fan will accelerate the cooling of the lamp in a controlled mode. The temperature of the lamp during operating mode is 1,000 C. Unplugging the lamp without letting it first passing through the off mode will cause the unequal cooling of the lamps glass which can cause the cracking of the glass and the premature malfunction of the lamp.

Compare Prices on Replacement Projector Lamps and Projector Bulbs

One of the most important aspects of a home theater doesn't even involve the TV, the DVD player, the projectors (if chosen) or even anything electronic. What good is having the best home theater in the entire neighborhood if everyone has to sit on metal folding chairs to enjoy it? Finding comfortable but appropriate seating not only allows a solid level of comfort throughout any viewing event, but it also enhances the entire home theater experience.

Obviously cheap metal folding chairs you can buy for $10 at Wal-Mart are probably not your best choice for home theater seating. That would actually be a major whiff. The choices for various home theater seating options are extensive, and each has some solid merit and may depend on how many people you generally plan on having over to enjoy the system.

Some people like movie theater type chairs to give it an authentic experience, while for others a comfortable sofa of several recliners is as good as it gets. Don't limit your options, either. This is your home theater system, and you should get not only seating that works well for the look and feel of your system, but seating that you will legitimately enjoy using. If you want recliners, you can even consider massage recliners, high quality (i.e. not dragged off the corner after college lets out for the summer) top of the line recliners.

Home theater seating is important because if you aren't comfortable while watching a great home theater system, then what's the point of the rest of it? It doesn't matter how good the rest of the system is because no one will be comfortable watching anything. In fact, the right home theater seating is arguable almost as important as the sound and picture quality of the home theater itself!

If you don't like the idea of a couch in a home theater set up, consider a series of recliners in a row. Not only do you get the amazing comfort of recliners, but by having them lined up in a row you can still have the effect of a theater setting.

DVD Projectors are exactly what they sound like

Don’t want to pay the cable subscription prices and no interest in Dish Network or Direct TV and there high prices. Most likely where you live you may get away with an HDTV antenna there are many UHF and VHF channels available. So why not!

Some areas you can get away with the indoor type if you live a rural area they will have a hard time with the signal. Then you will require the outdoor HDTV Antenna that will need to install on a mast or pole mounted to the side of your home.

There are a few things you need to know about HDTV antenna selection for the area you live. Here is a quick and fairly easy way to determine what your need. It runs off the zip code for your latitude and longitude and provides you an idea of the size to buy for the channels you would like to get.

The site is antennaweb.org and you should be able to get what you need without a problem.

The HDTV antenna you buy should receive both VHF and UHF to be able to get the largest amount of channels.

The outdoor HDTV antenna will get better quality reception than having an indoor HDTV antenna.
